In the history of Mexican Wrestling, usually based on a “tag team” system, there had not been any tournament in which the contenders could demonstrate their individual capabilities and styles, and also, at the same time, one that could give them the chance to earn a title that could be valid for a whole year.
Hence, looking for supremacy and new opportunities to all wrestlers, on February 21st, 1997, at Centro de Convenciones in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas, the very first Rey de Reyes tournament was celebrated. Virtually, the whole event was dedicated to such tournament, whose winner was Latin Lover, after defeating Héctor Garza. On the road to victory, other AAA legends, such as Octagón and Heavy Metal were left behind in the semifinal round, while other great wrestlers, such as La Parka, Abismo Negro, Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Jerry Estrada, The Killer, Máscara Sagrada Jr., Maniaco, May Flowers, Fuerza Guerrera, Pantera, Pentagón and Blue Demon Jr. had fallen on previous rounds.
At the opening fight, wrestlers Mini Goldust, Mini Mankind and Mini Vader defeated La Parkita, Super Muñequito and Mini Nova.
